In examining the modus operandi of Preterists, and the goals which they set for themselves, I’ve come to the inevitable conclusion that their main intent is to overthrow the New Testament canon of Scripture. By claiming that the Scriptures were superseded by their own fulfillment, Preterists hope to place the New Testament canon behind them, that they may promulgate a spurious “replacement Gospel” based on the dreams and illusions of men. This new Gospel, combined with other emergent forms of Christianity, will give birth to the harlot church of the last days.
Every major movement spearheaded by Preterists has had this goal in mind. There is simply no way to change, alter, or amend the teachings of the Gospel unless one can show that the Gospel itself is out of date. Preterism uses past-fulfillment hermeneutics as a tool for breaking up the cohesion of the New Testament message, that they may “slip in unawares” their false Gospel.
We are aware, of course, that most, if not all, of these individuals will claim that they adhere to a rigid “sola Scriptura” method of interpretation. After all, they say, we are simply promoting what the Bible itself teaches. However, this is a lie. No Preterist can claim “Sola Scriptura,” and this for two reasons. Firstly, there is not a single verse in the New Testament that looks back on the eschaton as past fulfillment. All references to the second coming speak of it as future; 2): Preterism uses extra-Biblical history, and not Scripture, as the starting-point of its assertions. It assumes that the destruction of Jerusalem has eschatological significance, without any direct Biblical support.
In putting the canon behind them, Preterists defeat the very rationale of “Sola Scriptura.” The reason why the Reformers held to the “Sola Scriptura“ method was to counter those who made the Scriptures of none effect through their man-centered traditions and negations. In all cases, those who held to a “Sola Scriptura” mode of interpretation assented to the fundamental premise that the canon itself was current. Therefore, they could rightly claim Scripture alone as sufficient in determining any matter of doctrine relating to faith or practice.
Now Preterists deny this overarching premise of “Sola Scriptura.” Let me give you an example. According to Sola Scriptura, if I want to find out about Jesus Christ’s second advent, all I have to do is consult the Scriptures themselves, and I’ll learn–1): that it will be like lightning, known throughout all the world; 2): that it will be accompanied by certain events, such as the judgment of all nations and resurrection of the dead; 3): that it is a future event.
In denying all of the above, Preterists tacitly require a belief that Scripture isn’t enough. Take the 109 New Testament texts which refer to the second coming of Christ. According to Preterists, not one of these texts can be used to authoritatively establish the Lord’s second coming at the end of the present age. According to Preterists, these Scriptures simply aren’t true any more. Rather, their re-interpretion of Christ’s coming as past is the actual truth–not the Scriptures themselves. Preterists herein show their perversity in substituting their fallible conjectures for the inspired teachings of the Bible.
Fact is, “Sola Scriptura” is only valid if you believe the Scriptures you’re using are still current. Because Preterists teach Christ’s coming occurred 2,000 years ago, they’re thrown the canon out of date, and therefore Scripture is simply not enough to determine eschatological truth. This is how, among Preterists and their followers, man’s word has been allowed to prevail over that of God.
It is a falsehood to respond that Scripture actually does teach a first-century coming of Christ. No. The Scriptures teach an imminent future coming of Christ, which is the hope of the church. I challenge any preterist to furnish a single text that authoritatively establishes the second coming as a past event. And if one be brought forward, I will gladly show that that person has, in his efforts to maintain false doctrine, placed the New Testament canon out of date. The consequence? According to Preterism, there is nothing in the Bible directly applicable to believers today.
This is why I strongly hold that Preterism in all its forms is a doctrine of demons, which must be resisted whenever it is met. If you are currently being harassed by Preterists, I urge you to bring these matters to your church’s attention. The spiritual welfare of others may depend upon your testimony at a crucial time. My main wish is that Preterism be completely exposed for the Satanic error it is, and that its teachers be publicly discredited and disclosed for what they are: agents and emissaries of the dark side.
What are your references? I don’t think I’ve ever seen a more gross misunderstanding of preterist theology.
